UPDATE: Cross-country athlete Thabo settles in a new environment

Star cross-country athlete Thabo Viti (20) who received his breakthrough of furthering his studies in the United States (US) has gladly settled in a new environment.

STAR cross-country athlete Thabo Viti (20), who received his breakthrough of furthering his studies in the United States, has settled in his new environment.

After a generous R60 000 sponsorship from an Alberton good Samaritan to ensure that he covers his tuition expenses, Thabo left for the USA on August 11.

Earlier this year, Thabo received a scholarship of $14 000 (R195 972) to further his studies in the USA at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, thanks to his great running ability.

He is now attending William Carey University, where he is studying towards a diploma in teaching.

During his time at the institution, he has been training hard and has travelled to Memphis and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

He will soon be going to other states for running competitions.

Saying goodbye

Colleen Dickensons, his mother’s employer, who is also very close to the family, told the RECORD that the day of Thabo’s departure was a bitter-sweet one. She said they were very proud of his achievements.

“Firstly, the excitement and understanding of the opportunities he was offered was the happiest thing to him.

“The Alberton community and close friends were extremely generous with helping raise funds to help Thabo reach his potential.

“I would like to thank everyone for their donations and also the Alberton RECORD for highlighting his story,” she said.

Great support

In an email, Thabo said William Carey University has been an eye-opener for him with all the school has to offer, and he’s finding it easy to adapt.

“The school is very diverse with people from all over the world that are enrolled in different programmes and sport.

“Having to meet people from different cultures has given me an advantage of seeing the world without having to go very far.

“I have met some great people that have listened to me as well and there have been several people who have helped me get settled in,” he said.

He appreciated the support he received at the institution and extended his gratitude to everyone who played a part in his journey.

“I am thankful for having a support system here at Carey because I know that when I face challenges, I will have somewhere to look for guidance and comfort.

“The training is quite tiring, but it is a wonderful way to clear my mind. I’m honestly appreciative for this opportunity given to me and I’m thankful beyond words to everyone who played a role in helping me pursue it,” he said.

Just before Thabo left for the USA on August 11, friends and family came out to support him.
