UPDATE: Alleged Brackendowns Mandrax manufacturer gets R50 000 bail

This comes after his arrest on September 4 on what was reported to be a Mandrax manufacturing facility at his Brackendowns home.

AFTER being in police custody at Boksburg Correctional Services, 48-year-old accused Thulani Mtotoba was released on bail which was granted at R50 000 on September 16.

At the time of his arrest, an undisclosed amount of money, in R20 notes, were also found hidden in his vehicle.

In an affidavit read in court, the accused was reported to being a taxi driver who earned at least R2 500 monthly.

His defence attorney told the magistrate that Mtotoba had a serious medical condition and that he was a breadwinner.

He also said the accused resides with his 72-year-old mother and with him being away, that will bring a strain to his mother.

The attorney also said if the accused was denied bail, his health would be compromised as he has to make frequent visits to the doctor for check-ups.

He then requested for his client to be released on bail of at least a minimum of R20 000.

However, due to the severity of his case, the magistrate granted bail at R50 000. His bail was paid on the same day.

According to an investigating officer, the Mandrax’s estimated value is about R6-million.

Mtotoba pleaded not guilty to charges of manufacturing and dealing in drugs.

Investigations are underway and he will appear at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court again on November 13.
