A FRANTIC intervention by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters could not save the lives of the three family members from perishing after their home was gutted by flames on June 28 in Katlehong.

A RDP house engulfed in flames was reported and received by City of Ekurhuleni emergency life-threatening call centre at around 8.55pm on June 28 in Dikole section, Katlehong.

Firefighters from Palm Ridge and Zonkizizwe fire stations responded promptly to the scene for life-saving interventions.

On arrival flames were coming from the bedroom and the entire roof had already collapsed.

Information received on scene stated the family was still trapped inside.

After the fire was extinguished, a search-and-rescue was conducted and the charred bodies of a toddler, believed to be three months old, a four-year-old boy and the mother, in her mid-30s, were found in the bedroom.

The scene was handed over to the police officers on scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however, it is alleged to have been caused by an electrical heater left unattended.

The City of Ekurhuleni pleads with members of the public to call 011 458 0911 in case of any life-threatening emergencies for the swift activation and intervention of relevant resources. Alternatively, they can use the national emergency toll-free number, which is 10177 or 112 (on a cellphone).
