Guest house owners warned of a conman

Guest house owners are warned to be cautious of a man in his mid-50s who makes long-term bookings into their establishments.

THERE is a new conman in town, and this goes out as a warning to all guest house owners.

Two guest houses in Alberton have been conned out of thousands of rand which they lost in revenue.

It was only by chance that the two guest house owners spoke to each other and found out that the same man had made bookings into their establishments with his family.

A man, in his mid 50s, booked into the guest houses with his wife and two teenage daughters. At first he paid for a couple of days or a week or two in advance, then he made a request for rental.

The money never came to light. In both instances, the man only left the guest houses after the owners had physically removed the beds from the units.

Cutting electricity to his unit, as one owner did, did not deter the man. “He just went along and bought a gas stove and stayed on for another six weeks. I only saw him when he came to the main house to charge his phone. That is when I decided to remove the beds from their unit.”

According to the guest house owners, he made all sorts of promises about paying the money owed to them – from waiting for money owed to him by SARS and other people to selling his car to be able to pay them. He even a signed an admission of guilt payment plan in the form of an official affidavit at the police station.

“We need to warn all guest house owners out there – maybe he has now moved on to another area – that they should be aware of this,” said one of the owners.

The man drives either a white Mercedes Benz or a white Honda Jazz.
