Alberton Child Welfare celebrates 79 years of existence

Alberton Child Welfare, a non-profit organisation, celebrated its existence and welcomed new members of the board on May 16.

ALBERTON Child Welfare celebrated its existence and welcomed new members of the board on May 16.

Child Welfare, a non-profit organisation (NPO) which was established in 1940, has for all these years protected vulnerable children who have been abused, neglected or been under difficult circumstances.

What they are all about

This NPO is part of the child protection community and see themselves on the forefront of fighting for the rights of children in the Alberton, Thokoza and Eden Park areas.

The NPO’s fostering process is done within the jurisdictions of the children’s court at Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, together with the Department of Social Development.

Child Welfare has in its existence offered an anti-bully programme to the children, parental training and training for their social and auxiliary workers.

The welfare is mostly funded by a small monthly subsidy it receives from the state. However, it is still mostly dependent on the generosity and donations from community members.

New members on board

The NPO has recently welcomed new board members. The board members, who come from different walks of life, are qualified individuals who are dedicated to offering their services.

The new members are chairperson Martin Kraukamp, vice-chairperson Johann Dippenaar, treasurer Eugene Jacobs, secretary Sylvia Nicolls, Johan Pretorius, Eddie France, Tammy du Plooy, Chante Stroeh and Grant Gilmer.

According to Zeeneth Domingo, director of the Alberton Child Welfare, the NPO has had challenges in running the welfare.

“For some time now, we have had financial constraints. We need money to pay social workers and to run things, such as maintenance, smoothly. I hope to see other organisations, that also help children, uniting to approach bigger stakeholders that will help us financially. The public has contributed by donating food, toys and clothes for our children,” said Domingo.

Johann Dippenaar, vice-chairperson of the Child Welfare, said the new board was committed to making a difference.

“As a committee, we are hoping to make Alberton Child Welfare a bigger and better organisation. We are always open for any sponsorship that will ensure that the Child Welfare runs smoothly,” he said.

Potential foster parents who want to foster temporarily and long term can contact Domingo on 011 907 3004/5 or send a fax to 011 907 3003 or email zeenith@albertonchildwelfare.co.za
