Grace Trinity supports freeing Lammie

The learners recited the Compassion Pledge in support of all animals and then Kathy told them the story of Lammie’s family and what has happened to them over the years.

IN support of Lammie the elephant, who is living all alone at Johannesburg Zoo, Grace Trinity School for Girls invited guest speaker Kathy Raffray from Ban Animal Trading to come and chat to the girls at the school about saving Lammie and how to take care of animals.

The learners learnt from Kathy that Lammie spends her days in the only shady spot against her enclosure wall. She has no pool in which she can submerge herself and there are no boulders or tree trunks for scratching. More importantly, as a lone elephant, she has no social environment. At the last count approximately 270 000 people have signed online petitions to free Lammie.

The learners recited the Compassion Pledge in support of all animals and then Kathy told them the story of Lammie’s family and what has happened to them over the years. Colouring in posters and writing letters to Lammie, the learners are asking for her to be set free to spend her remaining years in an elephant sanctuary.

“It’s been a pleasure to come and speak to you girls today and thank you for having compassion towards animals,” said Kathy.

Bronwen Dudgeon, a teacher at Grace Trinity, is challenging other local schools, especially for learners from Grade R to Grade Three, to support Lammie and all other animals, by contacting Kathy so she can go and chat with their learners.
