Family Day braai tips

These 11 tips will help you not be the drag at a braai day.

CONSIDERING a relaxing braai this weekend with family and friends?

Alberton’s ‘braai father’, Corné Bornman, from the Braai Mafia, shared some tips for your Family Day braais:

1. Fire is dangerous. You do not start a braai with petrol.

2. Brush stuck meat and marinades off your grid when done, but do not wash it with soap. The oils left behind will prevent rust. If you want to wash it, do so before the next braai. Rubbing half a lemon or onion held with a tong on a grid that is hot is all that’s really needed.

3. Don’t arrive at a bring-and-braai with your meat still frozen or in a fomo as you bought it from the shop on your way.

4. Rather buy one proper thick steak to be sliced and shared than buying six minute steaks.

5. Let your kids help make fire and also turn the meat when having a braai at home. Who else is going to teach them?

6. The fire is not a dustbin and ashtray.

7. Do not stack wood or other items at the base or feet of the braai. In the dark one trips over the items and that can lead to falling in the fire.

8. Invest in an electronic thermometer and learn its application in cooking meat to perfection.

9. Take pride and responsibility if you’re in control of the braai tongs. Meat is expensive.

10. Season and flavour your meat before, during and after the braai process. By doing that one adds layers of flavour that come together at the end.

11. Making “braaibroodjies” is better than giving presents or roses.
