WATCH: Parents protest for the sake of Eden Park schools

The parents are dissatisfied with how the Gauteng Department of Education has been handling problems at Opel Weg Primary and surrounding schools.

PARENTS and community members have been protesting outside Opel Weg Primary for four days. The school is currently closed and no children are attending classes.

The protesters have blocked access to the school and the road in front of it with burning tyres. Aside from this, the protest action remains peaceful.

The parents are dissatisfied with how the Gauteng Department of Education has been handling problems at Opel Weg Primary and surrounding schools.

According to the Eden Park Community Action Group, which is leading the protest, the education department has not responded to concerns they have raised about certain individuals who the community claims have been causing disruptions at the school since 2014.

The protesters are also showing their support for the principal of Opel Weg Primary. They believe there is a vendetta against him and that a union is trying to oust him in order to appoint their own people to the position.

WATCH:

On April 10, a meeting was held with the leadership from the district office of the Gauteng Department of Education, who said they needed more time to investigate the matter fully.

The protesters gave the district representatives the names of 11 staff members in various schools in Eden Park and the surrounds who they believe are the source of the problems. They want these individuals removed from the schools.

The protesters are unhappy with the statements made by the district representatives in this regard.

The RECORD attempted to contact the district offices and the Gauteng Department of Education for comment, but they were unavailable. We will provide updates on the protest as soon as comment has been received or the nature of the protest changes.
