Make donation to Safe to help them continue to take care of cats

Safe strives to help feral cats.

IT’S amazing that in South Africa we still have people who see the importance of looking after cats.

Non-profit organisation South African Feral Foundation (Safe) ensures that all cats in communities are humanely captured, sterilised, vaccinated against rabies, provided with a sanitary feeding station with fresh water and food, treated for illnesses and injuries.

They continuing to create awareness about the importance of looking after cats. The organisation advocates for cats to be sterilised.

“We are hopeful this can reduce the population of these at-risk furries,” said Safe marketing volunteer Angie Eatwell. She told the RECORD people can play their part in taking care of the homeless cats.

“People can trap the cats, sterilise, feed and release them afterwards,” added Eatwell.

According to Safe, sterilisation is the key to reducing the population of feral cats. Every year thousands of cats, including kittens, are needlessly euthanised. The good news is that every pet owner can make a difference by having their cat surgically sterilised. This will prevent unwanted kittens and will enhance the pet’s health and quality of life.

“We want to continue to educate people on the benefits of having sterilised and maintained feral colonies on their property, how it would lead to less unwanted litters, and that it could humanly bring down the number of feral cats,” said Eatwell.

She said Safe does not take in feral cats, they only feed and sterilise them. Safe is solely dependent on the generosity of the public to maintain healthy sterilised and inoculated cat colonies. They are pleading with community members and companies to help with cat food, second-hand goods for their jumble shop and any unwanted household items. Safe feeds the cats four to five times a week.

The organisation is open for people who want to volunteer. If a primary school would like to have an educational campaign about the importance of taking care of cats, please get in touch with Angie on 078 862 7010 or email donate@saferalfoundation.org

“We would like to thank Deon Oosthuizen (Meyersdal Nature Estate general manager) for donating feeders and Sam Fox from The Cat Co for making new feeders which keep birds out and the food dry,” added Eatwell.

Please drop off donated items at Safe’s jumble shop at 253 Frandaph Drive, Mondeor, or contact Charlmaine Pereira on 082 750 7449 for collections.

“Community members can also make monetary donations that will be utilised for sterilisations,” added Eatwell.
