Potgieter Street left in a bad state

Motorists have had enough.

DYSFUNCTIONAL traffic lights and the terrible state of the road at the intersection of JG Strydom and Potgieter streets have been a headache to a lot of motorists.

For the past few months traffic has been backed up due to traffic lights not working. According to motorists it causes severe traffic during peak times. They also said that there are only a few drivers who actually know how to approach a traffic light when it is not working. Now the one side of the road at the intersection, going towards Swartkoppies Road, is closed due to an open trench with water in it. The sand, which was dug up, is growing muddier with the recent rains and will soon flow into the street, also something which could cause a major accident.

OFF: This is the traffic light in Potgieter and JG Strydom streets which has not been working for months.

“It is an accident waiting to happen. First it was the traffic light and now the closing of the one side. You must now see the traffic,” said a motorist, who wishes to remain anonymous. Most motorists see this as a big safety hazard.

“You will see EMM workers there, but this has been a problem for weeks now which is just making it a nightmare for motorists to drive in that area. Something needs to be done,” said the motorist.

The RECORD did ask for comment a while ago about the non-working traffic lights and Themba Gadebe, the spokesperson for EMM, said on February 21 that there are officials deployed to locate the fault and commence with repairs.

• The RECORD did ask for comment again but did not receive it by the time of going to press.
