WITH 42 years of experience working in a barbershop and a decade of practicing his trade in Alberton, Wayne King (54) officially closed his barbershop, Wayne’s Barber Shop on February 25.

Wayne had his first experience working in a barbershop when he was 12 years old, working in a friend of his father’s shop.

When he finished school, he started training as a barber and following his military service began working as a barber full time.

“I love the trade,” said Wayne. “It has been very good to me.”

Of his colleagues who trained with him, Wayne was the last barber who was still in practice in the area. All of the others either retired or moved away from Gauteng.

Wayne has decided to retire from his barbershop to spend more time with his family. Wayne said that he devoted most of his time to his work and now wants to have more time available to do things with his family and friends. “It is time. I don’t want to run a business anymore.”

Wayne also wants to thank all of the people that have supported him in his long years as a barber. “The backbone of the community is the pensioners,” said Wayne. “They are the biggest supporters of our businesses.”

While Wayne no longer has his barbershop, he is willing to do freelance work for his long-standing customers. Those who want to contact him to inquire about it can reach him on 082 733 9885.
