Help feed feral cats in Aeroton

She reckons Aeroton is overrun with cats, and something had to be done.

INGRID Deacon and her daughter, Jenna, need your help to help feral cats in Aeroton.

They got involved in feeding the cats in March last year.

“In March 2017 I was alerted by a friend of mine to the horrible condition of some feral kittens in Aeroton. I am a private citizen and at that point had no connection to any animal organisation, I was just known as a cat lover. My daughter and I went to get the kittens, nursed them back to health, and homed them. Their mother had been run over and they were obviously not receiving the sustenance they needed,” she said.

She reckons Aeroton is overrun with cats, and something had to be done.

“This is when National Cat Action TaskForce (NCat) came on board to lend support with this massive undertaking. We then handed out flyers, saying we would be arranging TNR (trap, neuter, release) programmes in the area. We had some favourable responses and our fair share of scuffles with some companies, who suddenly decided they wanted the cats off their property. Many of these companies have, in fact, acted irresponsibly by not seeing to the problem when there were only a few cats. Others are very responsible, as they sterilise and feed their colonies,” explained Ingrid.

Since April last year they have sterilised 27 females and 24 males, they homed four kittens, one teen, two adults and sadly had to euthanise one sick cat.

“I mostly do this work alone. NCat offers me some financial assistance, but I pay for all the food myself and it costs me a fortune as I feed in 20 different locations. On average I spend about R2 500 on food per month. I also live in Randburg, so my travel expenses are pretty high,” she said.

Ingrid is appealing to the community for food donations (any cat food brand except Catsby). Any old kennels in reasonable condition that could be used for shelters, blankets and food bowls are also welcome.

Winter is coming soon and the cats also don’t have any adequate shelter.

“NCat, which is a registered NPO, is also happy to accept donations to help me fund more steries etc. Their bank details are: NCat, First National Bank, Wierda Valley, 260950, current account no: 62362218440 and reference: Aeroton Cats,” she said.
