UPDATE: South Crest man recovering after he was shot on Benrose on-ramp

A shoot-out ensued between him and robbers on the Benrose on-ramp near Johannesburg, heading east at about 10.25am on Tuesday.

DOCTORS are not sure if Kenny Jeacocks (46) from South Crest will have the full use of his right arm again after he was shot in the arm during an armed robbery on November 6.

A shoot-out ensued between him and robbers on the Benrose on-ramp near Johannesburg, heading east at about 10.25am on Tuesday.

As Kenny got onto the ramp, his vehicle was bumped from the left by another vehicle while the vehicle in front of him slammed on the brakes and reversed into him.

ON SCENE Kenny’s car was also hit when he was under fire from robbers armed with AK47 rifles and 9mm pistols.

The next moment he was surrounded by six males who opened fire with AK47 rifles and 9mm pistols. He realised it was an armed robbery and drew his weapon.

During the shoot-out, he managed to get out of his vehicle and return fire. Unfortunately, he had to retreat while firing as the armed men tried to surround him. He then hid behind a vehicle caught up in the traffic when he took two bullets in the arm.

“The only thing that went through my mind was survival and that I need to get away from this,” he said.

According to him, SAPS said they found 42 empty bullet casing and a box full of bullets on the scene.

IN HOSPITAL: Kenny Jeacoks is currently recovering in the Union Hospital.

Kenny is the manager of a security company. According to him, he was travelling with a large amount of cash in his vehicle’s boot that he needed to drop off at the Midrand branch.

The robbers got away with the money.

“You always hear these kinds of stories on the radio or you read about it, but I never expected a call saying that my husband was shot with an AK47,” said Kenny’s wife, Mardi.

Kenny also said he is alive through the grace of the Lord. His right arm was shattered and he already had two operations to save some of his arm’s tissue and to remove some of the exposed flesh.

After the shooting, he was taken to Netcare Union Hospital where he spent the first three days in the Intensive Care Unit.

Kenny is still recovering at the Netcare Union Hospital and will undergo a third operation where doctors will do a skin graft.

His wife said she is so thankful that her husband and the father of their nine-year-old daughter is still alive and with them.

“This again opened my eyes and I just realised that this is the time we live in and it is scary. I am glad that I am alive and still able to see my little girl grow up,” said Kenny. Some people will know Kenny as a rugby player for the Union Rugby Club and also an action cricket player at Meyersdal Action Sports.

He and his family have lived in South Crest for almost three years.

“I just want to thank Fatima Sheik, Jerome Goldstein and Mushood Waja from Mercedes-Benz/Cargo Motors M2 City who ran with a first-aid kit towards me during the shooting. Thank you for helping me and thank you for your bravery. Also a big thank you to my family and friends and everyone who phoned and the messages on social media,” said Kenny.
