A culinary night to remember

Lizelle gave each of the ladies a booklet with the recipes she used so they could also make these wonderful dishes at home.

IF you love to cook up a storm then this is the one evening you should not have missed out on.

The RECORD recently attended one of Lizelle Solomon’s evening cooking classes at her culinary studio in Alberante. The ladies-only class was called Spring Harvest Table with a South African Twist.

Lizelle has been crowned South Africa’s Cheesecake Queen at the 2016 Lancewood Cake-Off competition. She is also the owner of Le Petit Artisan Treats in Alberante, where she blesses local baking enthusiasts with hands-on baking and cooking classes. Those who pay to attend these classes get to sit back, relax, watch Lizelle cook and – best of all – sample her wonderfully creative dishes.

IN HER ELEMENT: Lizelle is happiest when she’s creating delicious food in her studio.

On this evening, there were 10 ladies who attended. Upon arrival, each woman got served a delicious cocktail called Jasmine Surprise. This was one of Lizelle’s own creations and was made of Jasmine gin, prosecco, pomegranate and an edible African rosella flower.

For the starter, Lizelle made a variety of Mediterranean mezze. This consisted of slices of smoked chorizo, toasted tortillas and grilled vine tomatoes to be dipped in a biltong-cream-cheese or baba ganoush dip.

As main she prepared a feast of butternut blinis (Russian flapjacks), a seven-hour roasted leg of lamb, naan bread with truffle oil and honey butter, and grilled vegetable and couscous salad (the vegetables in this salad included baby turnips, baby fennel, eggplant and sesame seeds).

JASMINE SURPRISE: This cocktail was a big hit among the ladies.

For dessert, Lizelle made salted nut ice cream and baked phyllo pastry shards with cinnamon and sugar. She suggested that the ice cream could alternatively be served with baklava or honeycomb.

Lizelle gave each of the ladies a booklet with the recipes she used so they could also make these wonderful dishes at home. Everyone enjoyed the evening thoroughly – not only because of the food but also because of the happy, social atmosphere in the room. It was a culinary night to remember.

BUTTERNUT BLINIS: Lizelle makes the tasty butternut blinis (Russian flapjacks) to serve in the main course.

“I hope you all had fun at this ladies’ night,” Lizelle said at the end of the evening. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with different flavours, tastes and textures. Be creative and you might just hit the jackpot with a great new dish.”
