JOLENE Stander (16) is a beautiful aspiring model in Alberton and she is currently participating in the Miss High School SA pageant.
She is a learner at Hoërskool Alberton and began her modelling career at the age of 13 and it has been her passion ever since.
Jolene is a model at Figures Model Finesse International Alberton and she is thankful for them as they will always be the people who taught her everything she now knows about modelling.
The RECORD touched base with Jolene to find out more about her life as a model.
AR: Who inspired you to be a model?
“My mother, Joey.”
AR: What are your goals as a model?
“To inspire others and also to become a role model for girls in need.”
AR: For how long have you been a model?
“Nearly three years.”
AR: What does it take to become a model?
“You must have confidence, be able to take disappointments, work hard to reach your goal and never give up.”
AR: What do you like the most about modelling?
“The thrill you get to express yourself through fashion in front of a crowd. I also love the fact that we can do fund-raising projects for charity.”
AR: Who makes your outfits for competition?
“In major competitions, all the girls wear the same dress but when we do a show or graduation shows they will give us a theme. My mom and I decide on an outfit. If we have to make something then my mom will make it herself.”
AR: Which titles have you won?
“I achieved the following through Figures Model Finesse International Alberton. I was first runner-up in the Figures National Student Model of the Year 2017 in the fashion division, the IMTA Talent Search Winner 2018 in the M-division. I also won Figures International Model of the Year 2018 in which I won a trip on the MSC Musica to participate in the Aspirant International Models from Africa (AIM) project in March 2019.”
AR: Are there any other pageants you are preparing for at the moment?
“At the moment I am taking a break from the modelling industry to focus on the Miss High School SA pageant and after that, I will start to prepare myself for the big challenge for the AIM.”
AR: How would you describe your journey with Miss High School SA?
“It will be a new field and a learning experience. I can’t wait to meet all the semi-finalists and to work as a group, learning how to do projects to uplift the community.”
AR: What is the purpose of the pageant?
“The Girl Power Foundation’s purpose is to develop teenage girls through workshops to become role models and to involve teens in charity and humanitarian activities.”
AR: Are you involved with any community organisations?
“I recently participated in a fashion show for Scarlett Red Boutique to raise funds for Ethemba Village for widows and orphans.”
AR: Who is your role model, and why?
“My mom because she guides me through the real facts of life and she showed me no matter what tragedies or disappointments she had in her life, she still looked forward and had a positive attitude towards life. She is always there and guides me towards reaching my dreams.”
AR: Tell me about yourself?
“I am a people person and like to laugh. I care about people and try to help where I can. I am crazy about the fashion industry.”
AR: What do you do in your spare time?
“Except for modelling, when I have spare time I listen to music and spend time with my friends.”
AR: What is your life motto and why?
“My motto is ‘never give up’. No matter how hard circumstances get you must never give up because if you do it means you never tried hard enough.”
AR: Anyone you want to thank or a message you want to send out?
“To everybody in my life who supported me when I needed help and helped me reach my goals.
“I also want to say thank you to Gees entertainment CC, the Girl Power Foundation and their sponsorship, and media partner Youth Drive FM for their cause in making young women believe in themselves. Being a girl does not just mean to be pretty and feminine, it means to be strong, help others in need and to build confidence in every single person.
