On August 16, Bianca Ackhurst was transferred to the South Rand Rehabilitation Centre in The Hill, Johannesburg, to continue her fight against Guillain–Barré syndrome.

Her father, Jeffrey Ackhurst, comments: “Bianca’s condition is improving daily. She can sit with little to no assistance and can stand unassisted for about three seconds at a time. She remains positive, despite dealing with this soul-destroying illness.”

Bianca undergoes around three hours of physical, speech and occupational therapy per day. While she is making progress, doctors suggest her recovery could take up to six months.

“When I took my first step with my walker, I reminded myself that one has to keep fighting when one gets knocked down,” said Bianca. “I am determined to recover and get my life back.”
