5 reasons to attend the Schools Setwork Festival at Soweto Theatre

From 11 September, some of the setworks learned at Gauteng schools will come alive on stage as Soweto Theatre hosts the Schools Setwork Festival. Here are some of the reasons to add this event to your calendar.

Nothing invigorates a school setwork quite like a theatre re-imagining. Here are some of the reasons to catch the works that have been created at The Schools Setwork Festival around the GDE school curriculum.

1. The Schools Setwork Festival offers a variety of setworks

From language subjects, performing arts and culture subjects, life orientation as well as history, The Schools Setwork Festival is a melting pot of various setworks that are a part of the GDE school curriculum. Each venue in the theatre curates a performance based on the subjects and curriculum being covered by schools in the catchment area.

2. See local theatre producers at their best

When it comes to South African art, local is always lekker. The Schools Setworks Festival guarantees that audiences not only get to experience educational setworks but also get exposed to the talent and artistic abilities of local theatre practioners that produced these works.

3. Learn something new

Theatre can be just as entertaining as it can be educational. The Schools Setworks Festival has invited theatre producers to submit applications to stage set works with the intention of the festival being a teaching aid for Gauteng schools to empower learners in relating to their setworks. Regardless of the work presented, you will definitely learn something new.

4. Support learners expressing themselves through theatre

Theatre and performance is a life skill that allows learners to express themselves creatively and gain confidence. The Schools Setworks festival has a programme focussed on young learners in Grades 7 to 9 who will perform to their peers. The programme offers primary and high school children an opportunity to explore a range of work fields within the theatre environment such as wardrobe, props, stage management, creative directing in music and drama, marketing, sound, lighting and various other career-shaping experiences.

5. Experience the cultural hub at Soweto Theatre

Soweto Theatre is the cultural heartbeat of Jabulani. It is home to some of the freshest and innovative theatre, live shows, festivals and art exhibitions. The landmark building offers a lot more than theatre – there are several performance spaces, dance facilities, public art and music.
