Young man from Eden Park dies from suspected drug overdose

Wesley Mohammed, a young man from Eden Park, is the latest victim of the drug problems affecting the area.

THE body of Wesley Mohammed (22) was discovered in his home early in the morning of July 27.

The discovery was made by his grandmother Colleen Mohammed when she went to retrieve her phone that was in Wesley’s room. Wesley was found on the ground with a syringe and a packet of what is believed to be drugs nearby, leading the first people on the scene to suspect that Wesley died from a drug overdose.

According to his grandmother, Wesley completed his code 14 licence on the day prior to his death.

“We were planning to go the Eastern Cape on the day,” said Colleen.

“I was planning to leave him to sleep and go book tickets in Thokoza. When I went to retrieve my phone, which he had borrowed, I saw him lying there.”

According to Colleen, Wesley had struggled with drugs in the past but was clean for six months prior to the incident. Wesley was with a friend during the evening celebrating his success.

No information regarding the results of the investigation on the cause of death is available yet.

Colleen spoke out about the dangers of drugs.

“We need to let young people know,” said Colleen.

“It won’t bring Wesley back but it can help save other people.”

Linda Thomas, a resident of Eden Park and one of the first people to respond to the discovery of Wesley’s body, also spoke out against the loss of young people in the area.

“The people in Eden Park want something to be done to the drug problem in the area,” Linda said.

“Between the problem of not enough jobs and the negative influences of nefarious people, young people are left with no choice.”
