My dream of meeting Mandela came true

All this was made possible because of my involvement in the news media. I was working as a photojournalist at the time.

IT was a dream that I valued for many years since Mandela and other ANC leaders were sentenced to life in imprisonment on Robben Island. On meeting this great courageous freedom fighter and political leader, I never thought that my dream of meeting Mandela in person and to speak to him will become a reality.

All this was made possible because of my involvement in the news media. I was working as a photojournalist at the time. Apart from the reality of meeting Mandela, I consider this as made possible by a Higher Power because millions of South Africans never had a chance of ever meeting him in person.

My first encounter of meeting Mandela was shortly after he was released from prison, he came to address a public meeting in Reiger Park, Boksburg. Afterward, the organisers arranged refreshments for their guests. I somehow felt intimidated to introduce myself to this gigantic leader whom I idolised for so many years, but when our eyes met, it showed me that he is interested meeting me. This gave me the courage to present myself.

His opening remarks were: “I see you are busy taking photos, I was told that you manage your own community newspaper” and with a broad smile he asked if I was ever picked up by the security police. I said they tried a few times, fortunately, Advocate Muhammed Navsa intervened.

Mandela showed a genuine interest and appreciation in what I was doing. I admired and cherished his charisma and humility and the manner in which he addresses people with respect and humility and a sense of humour.

Comments from Ahmed Kathrada said the following: He is among the best of companions, the warmest host, the most loyal and understanding of friends always finding time to listen to someone else’s problems and will take the effort to soothe and give sound advice. The goodness manifests itself in kind acts, hospitability and the hand of friendship always extended to others, especially to those in need.

In conclusion: Mandela lived in a world of brave and courageous leaders who helped shape a democratic South Africa. May we never cease to celebrate his life and always be reminded of the sacrifice, the imprisonment, torture, suffering, solitary confinement, banning orders, house arrests, always being on the run, on hiding. Let us always remember that many of our true leaders paid a heavy price, even death, for our freedom.
