[GALLERY + VIDEOS]: Suikerbekkie Day Care young ones learn CPR in #67minutes

WITH a little change to Mandela Day, the young ones of Suikerbekkie Day Care spent their day learning.

They welcomed Fox Security’s medical and tactical unit, together with Med Help Emergency Services (Pty) Ltd, to their school on July 18.

The event was twofold – first to cover the day care’s theme of the week, which is CPR, and also to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 100th anniversary.

“What better way than to spend our 67 minutes learning. Nelson Mandela always said that education is important,” said principal Cathy Breytenbach.

Children were very excited when they saw the emergency cars and personnel. Elowayne Gouws from Fox Security’s medical unit told the little ones how important it is to know CPR in an emergency.“When we arrive on a scene we first check for a pulse and if the patient is breathing,” he said.

While he addressed the children a paramedic from Med Help demonstrated CPR on a medical dummy. Some got the chance to have their heart rate checked. Two children also got either their arm or leg bandaged for a scene where the patient’s leg or arm is broken.

Elowayne also said that children should tell their parents to make way for an ambulance with its sirens on behind them in traffic. The children also got the chance to view the medical appliances up close.

The school thanked the members of Fox Security and Med Help Emergency Services Pty Ltd for their time.
