Stormwater drain in Alrode smell unbearable

A blockage in a drain caused the stormwater channel going past Garfield Road to reek.

A BLOCKAGE in a stormwater channel running through the property of Jacobs Transport has been causing problems for the workers of the property. The channel flows past Garfield Road in Alrode.

The blockage which is further up the channel has caused sewage and other waste to flow past the property bringing with it unbearable smells.

According to Dalene Schlebusch, SHE manager at the company, the smell that comes from the channel is completely detrimental to working conditions.

“Later during the day, when the sun has baked the waste, it is impossible for us to keep the doors of our office open,” said Dalene. According to her, this problem has persisted for almost two months.

A complaint was lodged with the municipality and the problem was finally seen to on June 29 when the municipality cleared a blockage in Randhart which they believed was the source of the problems.

This proved to only provide momentary relief as the water returned later in the week and by July 3 the smell had returned to the levels it was at previously.

According to Dalene, the people fixing the problem said the problem was not where they initially thought but rather somewhere else. They are now unsure when this problem will be fixed.
