What are IBT tariffs?

What does Inclining Block Tariffs mean to you the consumer?

INCLINING Block Tariffs (IBT) is a method of billing used by the City of Ekurhuleni for residential customers who fall under the Tariff A category of billing.

Tariff A is a method of billing suited to residential users that use a low amount of voltage per month. When you are charged in this tariff category the amount you pay for electricity increases as you use more electricity. The tariffs are divided into blocks based on usage.

The first block which ranges from 0-100 kWh is provided free of charge in terms of Ekurhuleni’s policy. Once you move over 100 kWh in a month a charge of R1.05,66 per unit is charged for your electricity. This is the case until you reach 600 kWh and you enter the next block. In the following block which is between 600 and 700 kWh the amount per unit increases to R1.79,61. Finally when your usage exceeds 700 kWh a sharp increase in tariffs occurs. The tariff per unit for usage over 700 kWh is R5.02,40.

The block system resets after every month when you will be moved back to the first block of usage. The IBT is charged for all Tariff A customers, both prepaid and conventional billing. The IBT system is intended to allow the low usage customers to pay less for their usage.

By request of the consumer or if your average over the past 12 months exceeded 850 kWh you can be moved to the Tariff B system.

Under the Tariff B system a flat rate of R1.56,11 will be charged per unit regardless of usage amount. An additional charge irrespective of whether electricity is used will be charged to all Tariff B users. The amount charged is R33.56 for credit metering customers and R10.00 for prepaid customers. This amount is deducted each month.
