Palmridge Sai builds playground in Zonkizizwe

Around 69 children live in this community and they had no formal play park facilities at all.

RECENTLY, the Johannesburg Palmridge Sai Centre began building a playground at the Montic Informal Settlement in Zonkizizwe.

This community service was offered to commemorate the Hindu supreme being, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s, annual Aradhana Mahotsavam celebration in honour of his life and teachings.

Around 69 children live in this community with no play park facilities. Around 25 aspirant devotees (sevadals) from the centre worked on this project. Eighty-five residents, together with the sevadals, cut the grass and removed stones and rocks from the area where the play park was to be built.

By April 6, the sevadals returned to the area to build a boundary wall using tyres. The ground was also flattened to prepare for the installation of the playground equipment. The organisation’s Education in Human Values (EHV) students from the Palmridge and Southern Suburbs centres joined the team on April 25 to paint the tyres in bright, beautiful colours.

The last stage of the project started on April 27 and was completed by May 5. A swing, see-saw, table with chairs and trampoline were erected. The official handover was done on May 6, where a ribbon-cutting ceremony was officiated and the children from the community sang the national anthem.

The project leader and a community representative addressed 120 people who attended the handover ceremony. Sevadals from the two centres distributed 140 meals packs and 170 party packs. This was followed by the sevadals spending some quality time with the children in the new play park. The love and joy this brought to the children were evident on their smiling faces.
