WARNING: Seniors not to fall for social security scam

Senior citizens should be highly alert about the people they choose to handle their pensions.

SENIOR citizens have been warned against fraudsters who come disguised as officials willing to help them process documents for their pensions.

This comes after Michelle Pelser and her team yesterday assisted 180 senior citizens who attended the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) meeting held at the Golden Falls Spur.

Residents brought forward concerns and asked for clarity on different pension issues which the team managed to successfully assist with.

Speaking at the meeting, Michelle said her team had noted with concern the number of fraudulent cases that the elderly are faced with on a daily basis with regards to their pension monies.

“People must not go around and pay money to fraudulent people who ask to help them with their pensions. They should not allow anyone to exploit them, hence we are here to assist with whatever we can,” she said.

“More so senior citizens should be patient and wait until their pension money comes and they should never be fooled by anyone who says they can make this process quicker, it is not true.”

She also said it was important for citizens to submit their new applications in person as a way to curb the rising cases of fraud.

“All new Sassa applicants should ensure they come and submit their new application to us in person and all those who are helping these senior citizens should make sure that on the day of any new application they are present in person,” Michelle added.

However, the overwhelming turn out from senior citizens shows people around the community are well aware of the assistance which awaits them at all Sassa meetings. The next meeting is set for 9am on June 26 at Golden Falls Spur.

“We do our best to assist our citizens but it is also important for the public to know and understand that we are only part of the Mondeor community team that is dedicated to assisting our senior citizens with issues within our limit.

“This helps our senior citizens in that they do not have to travel long distances to get help. We only stand as facilitators while Sassa itself handles most technicalities with regards to your pensions,” said Michelle.
