Next year will be better – 100 Cycle Challenge

We feel that the organisers’ lack of interaction with the local communities puts our name, our possible reputation, and that of cyclists in a negative light.

As a local cycling club, we understand that residents of Alberton, Albemarle, Dinwiddie, Lambton, Germiston and surrounding areas were affected by the road closure due to the 100CycleChallenge event that took place on May 6. Many of members did not take part in the event and were also affected by the road closures, as we too live in the affected areas.

We feel that the organisers’ lack of interaction with the local communities puts our name, our possible reputation, and that of cyclists in a negative light.

We would like to ensure residents that Germiston Wheelers Cycle Club was not involved in this event, in any way, and any complaints should be directed to the organisers (Zen One Productions) on 011 658 1356 or email to info@zenone.co.za, info@100cyclechallenge.co.za

Alternatively, they are also available on their social media platforms (@100cycle on Twitter or Facebook – 100 Cycle Challenge).

As a final request, please have patience with our members on the road, which we like to share with other road users.

Germiston Wheelers

The organisers commented as follows:

The 100 Cycle Challenge has a great understanding of the Germiston Wheelers Cycle Club’s respect for their fellow residents and road users. As race organisers, we have equal respect for the residents and businesses of Alberton, Albemarle, Dinwiddie, Lambton, Germiston and surrounding areas. We were mortified to hear that the 100 Cycle Challenge caused them inconvenience.

The City of Ekurhuleni confirmed full road closure for the race and was, in their capacity as ‘the presenting Host City’, solely responsible for implementing it and informing affected residents and businesses about it in advance.

We will do everything in our power to prevent any inconvenience as a result of a full road closure at next year’s 100 Cycle Challenge. We have selected the East Rand as the home of the race due to its unique character and topography. As such, we are fully aware of the fact that the long-term success of the race depends on the buy-in of all residents, businesses and road users. We are committed to developing the 100 Cycle Challenge into a sport event that the people of the City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng as a whole can be proud to call ‘their own’. We sincerely hope all organisers of cycling races in Ekurhuleni can work together in achieving this goal.
