[GALLERY + VIDEOS]: Strongmen put on an exhibition for Alberton people at Makro

Strongmen from all different walks of life gave spectators a show of strength that left many in awe.

BROTHERHOOD Strongman showcased their muscles at Makro Alberton on April 28. This was done hand-in-hand with Renault the Glen being the main sponsor.

Strongmen from all different walks of life gave spectators a show of strength that left many in awe. To cheers and encouragements, the Brotherhood Strongman group carried and lifted weights well in excess of a 100kg and made it look easy to boot.

HERCULEAN: André Sweeney, former SA Open Class champion, lifting his wife above his head.

During the event the strongmen exhibited events such as the log press, the farmer’s walk and the seated car pull. All of these events take prodigious strength and a fine-tuned technique to do both quickly and correctly.

The strongmen used this event as a training opportunity and a chance to test their strength. This training is especially important for the strongmen that have their eyes set on the national championships taking place on July 31.

Brotherhood Strongman serves as an introduction for people from various sporting codes into the sport of strongman. Once a month Brotherhood holds an event to introduce and expose the community to the sport.

CLEAN LIFT: Marius Vorster, the oldest compitor at 53, showing a clean military press.

“Brotherhood believes strongly in empowering the community,” said Peter Mc Gonigle, owner of Prime Spot Marketing who hosted the event and is the driving force behind Brotherhood Strongman.

SEATED PULL: Hannes van der Merwe pulling a car.
STRIDING: Werner Neveling pushing through the farmer’s walk.
DETERMINATION: Brian Steenkamp carrying the weights of the farmer’s walk to the finish line just metre’s away.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: Slyvester Mhuriro of Makro trying his hand at completing the farmer’s walk.
DOUBLE: Tyron Rathbon attempting the military press. This is made more impressive by the fact that as the lightest competitor at 60.3kg he is attempting to lift more than double his weight.

Not only were the Alberton community treated to the display of strength by these strongmen but were encouraged by the members to try their hand at the various events. People tried their hand at the farmer’s walk and some succeeded with the strongmen supporting them.
