THE annual Alberton Toastmasters Club potjiekos competition did not disappoint with the beef pot going against the goat meat pot on February 25.
In a closely contested competition the beef pot trumped the goat meat in a two team dual where teams were asked to create magic under the theme ‘magic moment’.
The potjies were judged on a few categories, some being team spirit, potjie and fire development, ingredients, food development, dessert ingredients and creativity as well as the presentation of the meals.
The judges commended both teams for effort, ingenuity and well-rounded potjies and said it was a really close competition. The team who prepared the beef potjie was made up of Charles Mokoena and Mary Mokoena, whereas the goat meat team consisted of Quinton Losper and Adri Fourie.
Charles Mokoena, who was partaking for the first time in the competition, said, “Being the first time doing a potjie, I wanted a simple and colourful dish. I have not much to say as to what makes a good potjie. But what I enjoyed was the support given by Quinton even though we were competing.”
Losper said his potjiekos was inspired by an opportunity and challenge to try something new.
“The previous week was the first time I had ever cooked goat meat. The potjie turned out great, there were no objections recorded against the goat potjie,” said Losper.
Losper, who was competing for the sixth time in the potjiekos competition, said he believes that fresh and well-balanced ingredients that complement each other with no dominant flavours make for a good potjie.
“We sourced the ingredients from various suppliers. The goat was from the butcher on Heidelberg Road, City Deep and goats milk cheese and chillies from Food Lovers Market. The sweet basil, thyme, gem squash, potatoes, lettuce, apricot jam, green pepper and honey, all home produce. Losper and Fourie’s team dessert of jam roly-poly was also well received.
