WATCH: Music video extras have fun in the sun

"I’ve been a fan of CrashCarBurn for many years ... I’m so glad I could be here and I’d do it again any day!"

ACTING as an extra is not only a way to make new friends and meet the members of your favourite band – it sure is a way of having loads of fun.

The RECORD attended a music video shoot for a new song by CrashCarBurn, local alternative rock band, and chatted with two women from Alberton who acted as extras.

WATCH:

The music video was shot at the Sydenham public swimming pool, for their soon-to-be-released song, This Could Be Summer, from their new upcoming album (which is yet to be named).

Two young women from Alberton, Mariaan van Niekerk and El-Mè Raubenheimer, attended the shoot and acted as background actresses (or extras) for the music video.

Fun in the sun

The music video was meant to portray a funny story about a man who visits the pool but keeps getting in trouble with the lifeguard. None of the other people at the pool are swimming, except for when a pack of dogs suddenly jump into the pool after the man – then everyone follows into the water, having lots of fun.

There were several extras who acted as visitors of the pool. All they had to do was pretend to relax at the pool, read a book in the shade, enjoy some drinks with friends, or just do whatever any normal person would do at a pool.

LOOKING GOOD: With all the extras ‘elaxing’ at the poolside, the music video is ready to be shot.

New year, new adventures

Mariaan and El-Mè shared their thoughts about participating.

Mariaan said: “My friend and ex-member of the band, Fabian Sing, told me about the opportunity to be an extra for this music video. Soon after, I sent the band an email that I was interested. They almost immediately responded and told me I could participate and even take a friend with me.

“I thought it would be fun to do this, as it’s a new adventure to kick off the new year. It was a fun, warm day and all I regret is the bit of sunburn I’ve suffered. The pool was like a beautiful oasis and I really enjoyed jumping in after the cute dogs!

I’ve been a fan of CrashCarBurn for many years and I secretly have a crush on one of the band members, but I won’t mention his name. I’m so glad I could be here and I’d do it again any day.

“If I could be in any music video again, I’d choose to be one for my favourite band, Alter Bridge. Lead singer Myles Kennedy is my hero.”

El-Mè said: “My friend, Shaunelle Pretorius, tagged me in the band’s Facebook post where they advertised that they needed extras. She said I should totally do it, and I was really excited. I immediately emailed the band and they responded surprisingly quickly and gave me the OK.

“I’ve also been a fan of the band for a long time and I also saw this as an opportunity to get out of my comfort zone for a change.

“It was such a gorgeous, relaxing day and I had lots of fun. However, I do wish my friends came with me – it would have been so much better with their company.

“I’d definitely do this again. If I could choose a band that I’d be in a music video with, I’d choose Catfish and the Bottlemen. Their music videos are just so visually beautiful and they’re such good people – I’d be honoured to support them.”

SETTING UP: Some of the organisers set the cameras by the poolside before shooting.

About the band

Some background about the band, according to their website: “Chart-topping rock band, CrashCarBurn, is testimony to the fact that, after a decade, a band can still be as fresh as the day it was incepted.

“Powerful rock anthems put together with a unique sound that is current and dynamic have given the four-piece band the ammunition needed to dominate the radio airwaves and live circuits in South Africa.

“The band is made up of Garth Barnes (lead vocals and guitar), Brendan ‘Bugsy’ Barnes (drums), Etienne Janse van Rensburg (bass) and Jaco Brittz (backing vocals & guitar).”

CrashCarBurn’s new album should be launched within the next two or three months, so be sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled. If you see their music video for This Could Be Summer, see if you can spot your fellow Albertonians.

DOGS: Some of the dogs wander around with their trainer before they’re ready to be recorded while jumping into the pool.
