Happy 2018 from the SPCA

Alberton SPCA is ready for another year.

Once again the festive season was a busy time for the SPCA with over 50 dogs and cats admitted in the week between Christmas and New Year.

It was a hectic time and our staff worked to assist those animals in need. Unfortunately, not all people had the festive spirit and once again our staff were subject to abuse.

It does upset them and although they want to retaliate they don’t; please remember to treat our staff with respect as they have a difficult enough job without having to accept abuse. The SPCA has to act inside the law and certain matters such as fireworks and barking dogs are the responsibility of the Metro, not the SPCA.

While quite a few strays have been claimed, sadly a lot remain with us. It is vitally important to check in person at the SPCA if your pet is missing. While we do check the lost and found book against incoming animals, only an owner truly knows their pet.

If your pet is still missing please come and check; we love reuniting pets and owners.

Like so many pet owners, we were disappointed in the number of fireworks around the area and support a total ban. However, this can only be done if enough people petition the government to ensure legislation is passed.

THANK YOU: Andreas Demetriou from Pick n Pay, Bracken City.

As usual we ran our Christmas stand outside Pick n Pay and our thanks go to Andreas Demetriou of Pick n Pay, Bracken City. Our Tree of Light had 1,125 lights on December 24, thank you to everyone who supported us.

We are still selling our popular CD desk calendars at R40, so pop by our offices in Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park to purchase yours – they are a super gift, too.

We had some lovely donations for which we are very grateful and send a big thank you to everyone who donated. We do try to email as many of you as possible, but some people just bring a donation and leave and we don’t have a chance to thank them. Please note we appreciate each and every donation, whether big or small.

We receive no government funding so we are entirely reliant on the local community to help us in our mission of preventing cruelty towards animals.

The staff and management committee would like to wish all Albertonians a very happy, healthy and cruelty free 2018.

Vanja Ingold, Alberton SPCA
