South lad still taking the karting trophies

Waterstone College pupil Leyton Fourie wins SA Rotax Mini Max Gauteng Regional Championship

SINCE we last published a story on Alberton’s own karting champ, Leyton Fourie, earlier in September this year, Leyton has gone on to win the SA Rotax Mini Max Gauteng Regional Championship.

CHAMP: Leyton Fourie on the track.

The 11-year-old from Meyersdal won the SA Rotax Mini Max Gauteng Regional Championship and finished second in the Vortex Mini Rok Gauteng Regional Championship. He was recently awarded the 2017 SA Victor Ludorum for being the best junior competitor which saw him score the most points in 2017 of all other junior competitors. Soon he will also be awarded his SA Colours at an MSA function set to be hosted at Emperors Palace.

Leyton represented South Africa earlier this month at the Rotax Karting World Championships in Portugal. This week-long event is for national champions from around the globe and Leyton competed against national champions from countries such as the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Brazil, Germany, France and Australia. Only the best 450 karters in the world get a chance to compete at this event as it’s an ‘invitation only’ event for national champions. Leyton was a top runner throughout the championships and finished third in the final race. The South karter would have won had it not been for an overheating engine which eventually saw him drop to sixth in the closing laps. This was an incredible effort as all his competitors had far more racing experience than he had in that environment.

Leyton’s efforts in Portugal were well noticed – he has been offered and has accepted a drive in the European Championship next year which will see him racing for the current European and World Championship KMS Karting Team.
