Versatile musician is an inspiration

His music is mostly inspired by the works of AKA, Lil’ Wayne and Drake.

MANDISA (23), also known as 20BuxxImali, is a Brackendowns resident who spends most of his time writing, rapping, singing and producing hip-hop music. On October 19, the RECORD met Mandisa, an aspiring hip-hop artist who wanted to share his story, thoughts and passion for music.

Music has been his biggest passion for the past nine years. “It all started when I was in Grade Eight,” he explains. “I started writing songs and haven’t stopped since. I write new ones every day and already have hundreds of songs.”

Live to inspire

His stage name, 20BuxxImali, means ‘R20 is money’. Mandisa grew up with few means and where he comes from, R20 has a lot of value. He says the reason behind this stage name is to remind him where he comes from.

For Mandisa, an average weekday entails making music via a digital database and working on his brand. He does this every day. In his free time, he likes to perform gigs at small social events and spend time with his friends and family.

“I think the best part about being a hip-hop artist is to be able to touch people’s hearts and make them smile,” says Mandisa. “The reason I strive to be a star is because I will touch a lot more people’s hearts the more they know me. Perhaps I can even bring about a positive change to their lives. Ultimately, I want to be a good role model and inspiration to the youth.”

No chance of failing

The music he writes is mostly themed around his personal life and experiences, relationships, poverty and, as he put it, the “hustle” of everyday life. His music is mostly inspired by the works of AKA, Lil’ Wayne and Drake. However, he also gets a lot of inspiration from his mother, Bali Magadi.

“My mom is my biggest inspiration,” says Mandisa. “I’ve seen her go through life like a true heroine. She’s been through a lot of hardship and tough times, but she always got through it and came out stronger – while she cared for other people.”

Mandisa sums up a successful musical artist as someone who believes in him/herself and someone with undying passion and ambition. “You’ve got to either make it or go home – there’s no chance of failing. To think you’ve failed is just an excuse to sit back and let life pass you by,” he adds.

Official project

He is working on his first official project – an EP album called Reverie which will feature eight tracks.

You can already listen to two of his tracks, Do It Like Us and Naynumba on Soundcloud, Hype Music (www.HypeMagazine.com) and/or www.KFCSoundbyte.com.
