Robbers’ chase ends in shooting

"Police found two AK-47 machine guns, one police R5 and a pistol."

“IT played out like a real Hollywood movie. It was just a rattling of heavy automatic machine guns and everybody running for cover as police and robbers exchanged fire,” said an anonymous bystander who witnessed the drama at the corner of Rover and Studebaker streets next to the Old Apostolic Church.

It is reported by Capt Vusi Mhlophe from Eden Park SAPS that the plain-clothed police from the province acted on a tip-off about a robbery to take place in Palmridge.

“We received a report that the robbers robbed a cigarette delivery vehicle and police chased from Palmridge to Eden Park up to where they drove into a dead-end street where the heavy shooting then occurred.

“Throughout the chasing, the robbers were shooting at the police. At the dead-end street, the suspect driver was shot, two fled and one was arrested. Police found two AK-47 machine guns, one police R5 and a pistol,” said Mhlophe.

Many residents staying near the scene said they will never forget November 3.

According to the police report, the one arrested robber appeared in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on November 6 and the wounded driver, who was rushed to Thelle Mogoerane Hospital, died on November 7.

Police are investigating a case of robbery.
