THE sentencing hearing for Jarred Silverman, the man who was convicted on one count of attempted murder, has been postponed again.
On Friday, November 3, the young boxer from the South was at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court to hear his fate, but the sentencing was postponed to January 12, 2018.
The court did hear from Bradley Swartz, one of the gunshot victims at the festival where Silverman discharged his firearm.
Swartz told the court how his social life is not what it used to be and that he doesn’t go out much any more.
Silverman’s defence lawyer tried to dispute this by saying he (Swartz) has been witnessed and could be seen on social media attending boxing matches and taking part in sports, etc, and that he has gone on with his life and is living normally.
“I go out sometimes, but I don’t go to clubs any more and I call ahead if there is some social gathering to find out if Jarred is there. If he is, I skip it,” said Swartz.
The judge asked Swartz whether or not he goes to church, to which Swartz replied: “Not any more.”
“What about forgiveness? Look at our country’s history, where Nelson Mandela, who went to prison for 27 years for nothing, forgave the evil people who put him there,” said the judge.
Proceedings continued. The merits of a custodial sentence which would not include jail time was discussed.
At one point, Silverman’s father interjected by putting up his hand to ask for an adjournment to discuss something with their counsel.
There were a few other points discussed, namely a violent incident that had allegedly taken place shortly before the incident, where it is stated that Silverman was assaulted by Swartz’ brother and father.
It was agreed that Silverman should be declared unfit to carry a firearm.
The judge said he had a lot to consider and needed time to do so, and thus he postponed the sentencing to next year.
Court was adjourned.
