Jackson Dam gets some TLC

Van Wyk added that parks should be a major part of any city planning as it benefits everyone in the community.

THE Jackson Dam, in Brackenhurst, received a bit of a clean-up to restore a healthy flow of water.

On August 17, ward councillor Marina van Wyk met with the heads of the parks and roads department to discuss the continuing efforts to preserve, maintain and improve Jackson Dam.

Work commenced the following week, with workers cleaning and opening the channel at the back of the island in the dam, clearing dead reeds and weeds and the build-up of sand that prevented the flow of the water.

“The need for more and better parks in our neighbourhoods isn’t just about us. Each park has its own ecosystem, providing natural habitats for many different animals, birds and insects. As cities develop, more and more of these creatures find themselves without homes. Parks also provide a safe place for many of those displaced by urban spread, and parks are great places to teach children about the environment and the importance of preserving natural ecosystems,” said van Wyk.

Van Wyk added that parks should be a major part of any city planning as it benefits everyone in the community and that is why communities need to stand up for the parks in their areas.

“Parks provide space for neighbourhood residents to interact with each other and meet new people. They’re also great spaces for events and for people to engage in recreational activities. This allows people to develop a sense of community. A park is perfect for a picnic, a concert or a farmer’s market, whatever your community feels it needs.

“I would like to thank Mandla Mtsweni and Petunia Mdakane, together with their teams, for the outstanding work they have done,” Van Wyk said.
