Man hangs himself in police cell

They found the man hanging from a piece of cloth cut off from his jean.

EDEN Park police were speechless and dumbfounded over an occurrence in a holding cell at the police station. A man held in a cell, for his own safety, hung himself.

As usual, just like any other day, members of the community were in and out of the station for affidavits when they suddenly noticed a man standing on the roof of the station. It was later determined the man was in his 30s.

According to Capt Peter Moremi, the man was instructed to get off the roof. He jumped and almost hurt himself when he landed on the spiky palisade fence. “The officers noticed that the man was mentally unstable. He was put in a holding cell to calm down. When they checked up on him 40 minutes later, they found the man hanging from a piece of cloth cut off from his jean. Paramedics declared him dead,” said Moremi.

A bystander told police the 30-year-old man was from the Eastern Cape and was a normal, working man. He alleged that the deceased started acting strangely as from August 26.

The police opened an inquest and are waiting for the man’s next of kin.
