WATCH: Southern star rises from Alberton

"My taste in music is quite diverse, I listen to lots of different types, but love to sing ballads and enjoy older music too"

A SINGING sensation from the South is making a name for herself and she’s only 16!

Britney Meistre, who lives in Meyersdal, Alberton, is winning hearts and minds in this season of Idols.

RECORD visited the songbird to have a chat and find out more about the talented young woman.

When asked about her singing ability, Britney smiled: “There isn’t really anyone musical in the family, so I’m not sure where I get it from, but I’ve been singing since I was seven,” she said.

“I’ve also been taking piano lessons (Grade One). I find it really helps me a lot with my songwriting and it makes it easier to bring across what I’m trying to do with my music,” she added.

Britney says she was never really into sports, but was always involved with choir and was always thinking about singing, so as from this year, she is being home schooled to be able to focus on her music.

As for a backup plan, should her music career not take off as planned, she reckons business should be a good fit for her.

“My taste in music is quite diverse, I listen to lots of different types, but love to sing ballads and enjoy older music too,” said Britney about her musical influence.

How about some advice or helpful tips for aspiring singers? “Hard work, time and effort and staying positive. I have a good support system and feed off positive energy. That’s when I’m at my best,” Britney told the RECORD.

About being on Idols and what it means to her: “It’s a dream come true. I’ve watched every season and I absolutely love the show. I really wanted to enter last year, but I was just too young to be able to, but this year was the right time,” says Britney excitedly.

Britney sang Lay me down, by Sam Smith, and got a big “yes” from all the judges.

Keep an eye on this talent, she is sure to be going places.
