Mandela Day celebrations at AMCARE’s premises

Mandela Day was truly celebrated at its best, all thanks to everyone who decided to give their 67 minutes to AMCARE.

MANDELA Day (July 18) encouraged everyone to make a positive change and, for several organisations, AMCARE was the place to do just that.

Upon entering AMCARE’s premises, a lively atmosphere was present. Quite a few groups of people showed up to offer their 67 minutes of goodwill and AMCARE made everyone feel right at home with a warm cup of coffee and snacks.

K.I.C. WHIRLPOOL: Nadine Mason (AMCARE social work supervisor), Jay Moodley, Leonie Swanepoel, Tshidi Mankhe, Rodney Dowling and Maria Nong.

The employees of Food Lover’s Market were on a mission to re-paint the kids’ purple playhouse at AMCARE’s victim empowerment centre. They also prepared healthy food hampers containing fresh fruit and vegetable foodstuffs. for those from the shelter. The catering ladies from one of the kitchens were busy preparing food to sell in aid of AMCARE. Two of the ladies, Ntombizodwa Zwane and Maureen Motoai, happened to have completed a six-day platter course and each received a certificate and catering starter-kit. With a proud smile, Marihet Infantino, AMCARE’s general manager, said: “We are very proud of you and we are excited to see you feed lots of hungry people in the future. Well done!”

Meanwhile, employees of Metropolitan Life, as well as Hastings Banda, – an AMCARE employee who maintains the vegetable gardens – were raking away at dead leaves and making the garden neat and pretty for their 67 minutes of goodwill.

At the entrance-side of the premises, Pam Golding Properties had set up what they called the “Hang Up Help Out” clothing stalls. This entailed plenty of tables stacked with donated clothing, from which AMCARE’s clients could pick and choose as many clothing items as they needed. The rest of the clothing would then go towards their charity shop and be sold for income.

In another kitchen, Makro employees were hard at work peeling and chopping R1 000 worth of vegetables, which they kindly donated. The vegetables included potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternuts, carrots and onions. Erika Moseleni, manager of Makro Alberton said: “We do this because this is Mandela Day and we don’t always have time on other days. AMCARE is right on our doorstep and we really appreciate what they do for the community, so of course, we want to support them.” The other employees nodded and smiled in agreement.

GARDENING: Phumzile Msiza, Mahlare Maredi, Lulama Zathi (all from Metropolitan Life) and Hastings Banda (AMCARE employee) cleaning up the garden.

K.I.C. Whirlpool also visited AMCARE with four brand new appliances, which they donated. This is a very special gift because upgraded appliances mean AMCARE can increase their client capacity. They also set up a stall with sweetie parcels, chips and cool drinks for AMCARE’s kids and clients to enjoy. How sweet!

To add to the sweetness, Checkers New Market kindly donated a cake and cupcakes and brought smiles to plenty of faces.

PEELING AWAY: Makro employees peel and chop plenty of vegetables which Makro donated to AMCARE.

Last but not least, Standard Bank COO Division also donated beanies and scarves to AMCARE’s clients to stave off the cold weather.

So it was quite a busy day, but it could not have gone better. Mandela Day was truly celebrated at its best, all thanks to everyone who decided to give their 67 minutes to AMCARE. On behalf of AMCARE, thank you for taking this time to turn an act into impact.
