EMPD’S weekend Ses’fikile Blitz on Ekurhuleni freeways, targetting drinking and driving, netts 41 drivers

THE Freeway Unit members from EMPD took law enforcement to the Ekurhuleni freeways from Friday, June 16 until June 18.

Their main aim was to be on the lookout for those who had imbibed and were behind the wheel endangering other law-abiding motorists’ lives and other road-users. They wanted to bring them to book because other road-users’ lives were also at risk.

The focus was on the hot spots along the R21, N3, N12 and R59 freeways, as well as their on-ramps and turn-offs, where 41 drivers were arrested.

From Friday night until the early hours of Saturday morning, eight drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence on the R21 near Voortrekker turn-off. In the Germiston area on the N3 by the Van Buuren turn-off , six intoxicated drivers were arrested, while another six were apprehended on the N3 not far from the Barry Marais exit. Alberton, Dawn Park and Primrose saw one drunken driver apprehended in each of their areas.

On Saturday. along the N3 in the Vosloorus area , 14 drivers ended behind bars for drinking and driving. On Sunday morning another one was nabbed in Elsburg.

The forty-one drivers were all charged with drinking and driving at Bedfordview, Germiston, Alberton, Dawn Park, Kempton Park and Primrose police stations and are expected to appear in the respective Magistrates’ Courts soon.
