Superhero Day a super success

With an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Grade 5 learners from Brackenhurst, Glenanda, Townsview, Robertsham and Winchester Primary Schools were put through their paces in a series of fun, yet complex challenges.

AN inaugural Superhero Day was recently held at Glenanda Primary School and was one of the first of its kind in South Africa.

BUSY: Grade 5 learners busy with some of the challenges.

Sponsored by Via Afrika and CMIT Computers, the Superhero day took place on Saturday, 27 May. The inter-school competition saw learners compete in various disciplines, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Grade five learners from Brackenhurst, Glenanda, Townsview, Robertsham and Winchester Primary Schools were put through their paces in a series of fun, yet complex challenges.

WORKING: Learners from different schools took part in various intriguing challenges.

The winning school in each category was as follows:

Lego Technics Challenge – Townsview Primary School

Natural Sciences and Technology Challenge – Brackenhurst Primary School

Tabtor Mathematics Challenge – Glenanda Primary School

General Knowledge Quiz – Brackenhurst Primary School

Speed Reading Challenge – Brackenhurst Primary School

Speed Maths Challenge – Robertsham Primary School

The event was the brain-child of Glenanda Primary and sought to show learners the exciting and advanced applications in STEM subjects. In the various challenges, learners were exposed to applications beyond the day-to-day classroom content. Most importantly, learners had fun and got to hone their problem-solving skills.
