Water running non-stop for 10 years

Residents say they live in fear and don't know when to expect disaster.

RESIDENTS in five houses in Moped Street, Eden Park are living a life of fear and anguish. They await with dread the day their houses will just sink down into the ground.

From beneath all five homes, water has been bubbling up into the backyards and around the houses for about 10 years – and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) seems to have forgotten about the problem and the looming disaster.

Since 2014, the RECORD has published articles concerning the Moped Street water problem, detailing reports and telephone calls made by the late resident, Desmond Jarvis, to EMM and the reference number he obtained from the office of EMM.

One very concerned resident, Piet Vries, said: “We live in fear and we are very worried about this water coming from beneath our house that is forever running. We don’t know what to expect and when to expect disaster.”

According to the residents, EMM had promised to send an engineer to assess the problem but nobody ever arrived. The EMM workers allegedly told the residents that the problem could have been caused by a burst pipe running behind the houses.

The RECORD forwarded the enquiry to EMM and is awaiting comment.
