Residents have their say on crime in Alberton

"Crime is so high and things aren’t how they used to be."

WITH a high speed chase following the hijacking of a SAPS vehicle on the N3 and culminating in the suspect being shot and crashing the car in Florentia on Monday, May 15 the RECORD returned to the area where it happened, and asked members of the public for their opinion on crime in Alberton.

ALBERTON: Residents give their honest opinions about the crime in Alberton.

Nailene De Menezes said: “The crime is everywhere these days. Recently, three people broke into our yard and broke a window, but luckily we arrived just in time before they stole anything. We also had a break-in once before. The crime can’t be prevented.”

Magda van Deventer said: “Jail is not enough – there is too much corruption. I would welcome the return of the death penalty, or else the crime is just going to go on and on and get worse.”

A man who wishes not to be named, said: “I don’t know what has happened to this place. Crime is so high and things aren’t how they used to be. I will say, however, that the police did a good job on Monday with the hijacking incident – I would love to see more crime-fighting with force and less with bribery.”

RESIDENT: Coen van Greuning feels that the police needs to take their duties more seriously in order to eradicate crime.

RESIDENT: Arthur White is lucky not to have been affected by crime in Alberton, but acknowledges that it is a big problem, not only in Alberton, but in the whole country. For free daily local news in the south, visit our sister newspapers Alberton RecordComaro ChronicleSouthern Courier and Get it Joburg South Magazine.
