The South says goodbye to a great man

Beytell received an honour guard from the Gauteng based members of the First Aid League and the karatekas of the dojo he attended bowed in respect as the hearse carrying Beytell drove past.

ALBERTON and the whole of the South has lost one a dear community member.

Jacobus (better know as Kobus) Beytell died on April 24, 2017, after suffering several heart attacks.

The RECORD recently reported on Kobus’ remarkable achievements in karate in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, namely one of his legs being amputated under the knee and half of the foot on his other side too.

He will probably be best remembered for the work he did in first aid and his love of rugby.

He served the Alberton, Union and Germiston rugby and athletics clubs, among others, on the then East Rand and Johannesburg for more than 30 years.

LOVE OF THE GAME: Kobus Beytell with the Golden Lions mascot at a rugby match.

Some highlights of his life and career include having being named in the RECORD and the Southern COURIER several times for winning first-aid competitions. He once even saved a young girl’s life after she had an allergic reaction to a bee sting.

He did all this as a volunteer, a true humanitarian and lover of his community.

Beytell served the community as a Commissioner of Oaths.

He also worked in car sales at the old Midway Toyota and for many years he was a debt collector.

Kobus had a profound impact on the community he so lovingly served and he will be greatly missed.

He received an honour guard from the Gauteng-based members of the First Aid League, and the karatekas of the dojo he attended (JKA Karate) bowed in respect as the hearse drove past.
