THE Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) arrested seven drivers for speeding recently.
The stretch of the N3 southbound freeway between the PPC (cement factory) and the bend just after the Rand Airport turnoff is notorious for horrific accidents, mostly attributed to excessive speeding.
On Sunday, April 16, the EMPD High Speed Unit made seven arrests between 06:00 and 10:00.
All seven suspects were male drivers aged between 26 and 41. The highest speed recorded was 176 kilometres per hour. It was done by a 38-year-old man on a Yamaha motorcycle who claimed that he was rushing home. The rest of the speedsters clocked speeds of between 161 and 164km/h, advancing reasons of being late for church services.
“The Germiston police station was their home for a couple of hours on charges of reckless and negligent driving before posting bail of R1 000 each. They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Lieutenant Colonal Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD.
