St Patrick’s Church group helps the needy

Its mission is to assist the needy with food, clothing, blankets, and any other items that are donated to them from the community and surrounding businesses.

MORE than 500 people were given food parcels and cooked meals by the St Patrick’s Mother Teresa Charity Group at La Rochelle, corner Fifth Street and Johannesburg Road on Wednesday, April 11.

WATCH:

Volunteers braved the cold and rain to help the community of the South to have great Easter holidays. There were three stops where the group handed out food parcels to residents. First it was St Patrick’s Catholic Church in La Rochelle, then the children at The Lighthouse in Linmeyer and finally the community of Glenesk.

WORKING TOGETHER: Volunteers helping out with the distribution of the items.

Founder and director of the group Gina Louro said this was a great day for the community of the South and she thanked all the volunteers, Portuguese ambassador as well as the companies and individuals which donated all the food and essentials. “Volunteers run the group with no salaries being paid to anyone. Apart from giving food parcels and running a soup kitchen on Tuesdays, we share blankets and clothing with other charitable organisations. We are mostly dependent on organisations which donate to us and individuals who open their hearts to the group,” she said.

QUEUE: Everyone at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in La Rochelle has his or her food parcel.

Each family got mealie meal, rice, milk, macaroni, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, snacks, bread, fruit and vegetables, Easter eggs and a hot, cooked meal.
