More than just a shopping destination – this mall cares

During the festive season, shoppers and tenants had their gifts conveniently wrapped, for a small donation, by The Edu-Care Foundation volunteers at the gift wrapping kiosks.

OVER the past four months, Mall of the South has taken time out to give back to the local community through various initiatives.

With the assistance of loyal shoppers and tenants, over R50 000 was donated to various organisations including Lerato Educational Centre, the CANSA Shavathon and South of Jo’burg Business and Tourism (SOJO).

During the festive season, shoppers and tenants had their gifts conveniently wrapped, for a small donation, by The Edu-Care Foundation volunteers at the gift wrapping kiosks. With their dedication and support, a total amount of R42 258.91 was raised to assist Lerato Educational Centre Pre-School, with 40 sets of stationery packs for children between the ages of four and five. The stationery packs included a workbook, two different educational colour-in books, colouring pencils, an eraser and a sharpener.

On February 16, The Edu-Care Foundation and Mall of the South Centre Management handed over the stationery packs to Lerato Educational Centre School principal, Sister Helen Hartnett. The Edu-Care Foundation founder Daleen Havenga said, “Thank you for allowing us to do the gift wrapping service at Mall of the South; Sister Helen is overwhelmed and humbled with the contribution for the children. The Edu-Care Foundation looks forward to working with you in 2017.”

Mall of the South participated, for the first time, in the national 2017 Loud in Colour Cansa Shavathon on Saturday, February 25, in the Checkers Court.

Participants were given the option to spray, shave, wrap or simply donate R50 or more. Shoppers and tenants supported the initiative by shaving or spraying their hair for a small donation of R50 (or more) and for children (under the age of 12) for R25.

Yolandi Jacobs, Community Mobiliser Fundraising Developer of the East Rand CMFD, said, “We are proud to announce that over R5 000 was raised and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to host this event at Mall of the South.”

SOJO works closely with businesses, communities and government agencies to make the South the best side of Johannesburg and also assists with municipal operations including cleaning up of illegal dumping sites and much more.

On March 9, Mall of the South centre management donated a two-stroke 43cc brush cutter to assist SOJO workers with the grass cutting. This will assist motorists with road visibility in the surrounding areas of the Mall and where SOJO members are present.

SOJO CEO Nicky Vakaloudis said, “We would like to thank Mall of the South, one of our SOJO members, for their generous contribution. We love the south of

Johannesburg and as a community, we can work together to raise the level of service from SOJO point of view and to make the South the place to be in Jo’burg.

Sign up with SOJO to be part of the revolutionary movement to uplift facilities and employment in the South of Johannesburg.
