A record number of 132 golfers took to the course at Reading Country Club on Thursday, 16 March, to take part in Stepping Stone Hospice’s second annual golf day, raising R100 000 towards the hospice’s building project.
Thankfully, the rain stayed away so the golfers could play their rounds under a bright blue sky, in the spirit of charity and generosity.
The format of the day’s competition was a Betterball Stableford.
It was won by the pairing of Leon Deschamps and Frans van Tonder on 47 points.
Not only did they win water filter systems for their homes, donated by RO Water Systems, but they were also awarded the coveted Vicky Bruce floating trophy. The trophy is in honour of the late Vicky Bruce and was handed over by her mom and Stepping Stone CEO Tersia Burger.
Stepping Stone Hospice fund-raising manager and golf day organiser Marietjie Tame said: “We are deeply grateful to all our players and sponsors for their participation. I am very much aware of how tough it is out there for the private sector in this economy, which makes me even more thankful for the continued support our hospice receives.”
Golfing pro Brandon Pieters challenged the players on the par-3 15th hole to a Beat the Pro competition, while several other valued sponsors entertained the golfers on various holes throughout the day.
The prize-giving dinner was a jovial affair, with a combination of auctions, great entertainment and excellent camaraderie.
Burger unveiled some of the organisation’s plans and aspirations for the coming year and thanked everyone for helping hospice as they continue to care for and support people with life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families.
