Youth pledges responsibility on sexual health matters

The competition’s bone of contention was: “Comprehensive, Sexual Reproduction Health Rights and Responsibilities in Schools.”

With every constitutional right comes a set of responsibilities.

This was the unanimous declaration by young minds at the Ekurhuleni High Schools Public Speaking Competition in Alberton on February 14.

The competition’s bone of contention was: “Comprehensive, Sexual Reproduction Health Rights and Responsibilities in Schools.” Learners used the occasion to present robust arguments on the subject.

However, Lindokuhle Mathebula, a Grade 12 learner from Mamelong Comprehensive High School in Tsakane, stole the show, exhibiting unparalleled arguments on the topic.

As the fourth speaker of the day, Mathebula’s argument centred on extensive sexual health education in schools and communities as a tool to address the scourge of sexual health ills.

According to Mathebula, comprehensive sexual health education will reduce risky behavior among schoolgoing children.

“The advantage of sexual health education is its inherent ability to dispel myths on sexual health matters such as to say sleeping with a virgin cures AIDS,” she said.

Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Services, Clr Dora Mlambo commended the young people for the amount of work invested in their presentations.

“The level of confidence you display when you ascend the stage to the robustness in your arguments only proves that the future of this country is in good hands. As the City we are proud to have intelligent young people in the community. When we see you, we are convinced that indeed education is the key to success in all areas of our lives.”

MMC Mlambo further congratulated the top achievers and all the participants. She expressed gratitude to the educators for equipping their learners with the skills to be highly competitive.
