Gran (87) still serving the community

She has a very sharp mind – Gran does not even use a calculator when ringing up customers' items.

ONE is never too old to make a difference and Joyce Hayes, or “Gran” as she is lovingly known to many, is the perfect example!

On Saturday, February 11, the Alberton SPCA held another flea market event, where Gran tended to the second-hand clothing stall. She has been doing this for the past fifteen years, since the age of 72.

And today, at the age of 87 Gran is still loyally helping the SPCA every weekend, mostly by selling second-hand clothing donated by the community.

Where most folk of her years prefer to take life slow, she has a very sharp mind – Gran does not even use a calculator when ringing up customers’ items. Her long-time friend, Regson Muthanyi, expresses his admiration: “I have so much respect for her. She never even uses a calculator. She is still very sharp, despite her years. Every weekend she is on her post to help. She is my very dear friend.”

Gran Hayes says that one of the best lessons she has learned during her life, is that it is very important to treat every person the same. “If someone is good to me, I’ll be good to them. Simple as that,” she smiles.

Listening to the admiration many hold for Gran you soon realise that she has one of those hearts that would make the world a better place. Her many friends, inspired by her way of life, wish Gran a life enriched with love, peace and prosperity.
