Alberton libraries still going strong

The library can offer a sense of focus and peace that modern technology cannot replace.

DESPITE this new media age replacing books and paper, Alberton’s libraries (the one in town and in Brackenhurst) continue to welcome visitors who are eager to read and learn the “old-fashioned” way.

Alberton Library is managed by Hildegard Tshweu. Bracken Library, however, has a different manager, Patrick Mkefa, even though both libraries are part of the same municipal organisation.

Tshweu explains that the library used to have more visitors, but that new technology advancement, such as e-books, Google, Wikipedia and similar internet platforms have rendered books obsolete for a lot of people.

“Nobody will drive all the way to the library when they can just look something up on the internet,” she says.

Despite this, there are still many loyal readers who visit the library, in particular scholars, students and the elderly. According to Tshweu, elderly people are often techno-phobic and prefer books to new media.

Students are also drawn to the library for its serenity and internet booths, while the children’s library is a magnet for schoolchildren with its vast variety of storybooks and colourful interior décor.

Do not doubt that a library can offer a sense of focus and peace that modern technology cannot replace. Not to mention the fun and social connections it can bring. The library offers various activities to the public, such as book clubs, writers clubs (for the aspiring writer, as well the current one) and study hour sessions for students.

Feel free to visit the Bracken library in Delphinium Street, or contact Patrick Mkefa on 011 999 2610.

Alternatively, visit the Alberton library, next to Alberton City shopping centre. The contact numbers are 011 999 2617 (children’s library) and 011 999 2618 (readers of all ages).
