A ‘queen’ in the South

“All employees are first vetted before being hired and service contractors before coming onto the premises or entering the grounds. Security is important to us.”

QUEENSHAVEN Retirement Village, situated in South Hills, has been in existence since 1952 and is situated on nine hectares of landscaped gardens in a secure environment.

Foundation manager of Queenshaven, Johan Pretorius, says, “Our village is a real gem and we’ve recently had our security upgraded with the latest high-tech CCTV camera system. We have 24-hour, seven-days-a-week security with security patrols at the entrance and access gate. The security is inclusive of ER24 ambulance service for emergencies.

“All employees are first vetted before being hired and service contractors before coming onto the premises or entering the grounds. Security is important to us.”

Recently Queenshaven held a wheelchair project, resulting in them getting quite a few new wheelchairs. “Instrumental in assisting with the project were local residents, corporates, Alberton LewenSentrum and councillors from Alberton, Bruna Haipel and Izak Berg.

“In October last year we had a highly successful golf day with assistance and support from Marias Viljoen, Hi Zone, Fedics Catering, Astrodon PTY Ltd and Michael Pashut (Commercial Auto and Bus). Most of the proceeds have gone towards our new training centre, which is nearly complete, and this will provide a service, not only for the residents, but to other organisations who will host workshops, such as the Alzheimer’s Society, where briefing and debriefing of families will take place.

“If a resident of Queenshaven develops Alzheimer’s while living here, the management and staff will manage the condition.”

The good name of Queenshaven has been carried down through generations, and with all the amenities they have in-house, such as a swimming pool, hairdresser, library, coffee shop, gym, carpet bowls, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, there’s lots to keep residents busy. There are also laundry facilities, and a brand-new 18-seater bus that can take those residents who feel like some retail therapy to local shopping centres, Monday to Friday. An inter-denominational chapel is on the grounds, offering Sunday services and memorial services for those who require them.

Facilities offered are for independent living, assisted living (semi-frail) and frail care. “Presently we have some vacancies for independent living accommodation and we welcome you and your family to come and see what we offer,” said Pretorius.
